Sun Wolf's old mercenary troop has tracked him down, asking for his assistance. Someone has hexed their camp, causing deadly mishaps, spoiled food, and general bad luck. While he attempts to track down the source of the hex, he is contacted by a powerful wizard— one who threatens to enslave him, mind and body.
To make matters worse, the things Sun Wolf has endured have caused him to seriously re-examine the morality of mercenary work, and find it wanting. So there is a barrier between him and his old comrades, one that he both wants to breach and avoids breaching. But he has to find the source of the hex before it kills them all, including his beloved Starhawk.
It is a pity, but it seems that this is the last in the series. Hambly has certainly left it open for more tales, and I hope that either she returns to it later— or that there are other books I have been unable to find so far.
