To Reign in Hell : A Novel Steven Brust Date: 07 July, 2000 — $10.17 — Book Rating: |
Fiction, Fantasy
This is an account of the war in Heaven, told as a fantasy novel. This is a tale of how the angels became devils, or something... laregly told from the point of view of a bunch of very confused people who find themselves on opposite sides due to severe misunderstandings.
The sad part is that most modern readers won't know which parts are Brust's and which he takes from tradition (rather more than you'd think.) The war in Heaven is a deeply detailed tale, and Brust makes very few changes from the commonly understood text.
At any rate, this is not the easy-breezy style of Jhereg, nor the overwrought prose he uses when he writes about Draegareans. It's a simple style with occasional rhetorical flourishes. The main problem readers will have will be in approaching the text neutrally and not flinching at the names of certain characters.
And more I cannot say.
